About Zenobia Harper

As a Gullah culture keeper, Zenobia founded the Gullah Preservation Society in Georgetown County to reconnect the Gullah community to their African roots and intellectual inheritance. This reconnection takes many forms: a community garden that hosts plants of the African diaspora, her emerging practice with indigo dyeing and cultivation, and scholarship and research into the deeproots of Gullah culture in Georgetown and across the world.

"When I grow and process indigo, and when I dip a piece of fabric into a vat of the rich, beautiful dye, I am connecting with the skills and talents of my Gullah Geechee ancestors. I am choosing to do what they did, as a free woman filled with JOY, and I am grateful!"
